Wing and I were so excited and tired. Yep, a lot of last-minute packing went on till late so by the morning, our eyes were droopy and hearts were racing \u2013 adrenaline pumping with the excitement about going away for a month + the genuine concern about forgetting to pack something important!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A taxi ride away and we were at Gatwick. Wing did his usual of getting some cologne before we board the plane. The flying experience was unlike any previous experiences because of Covid-19. Although masks were not mandatory or even advisory at the time, I decided to keep my mask on during the flight, only taking it off for meals.<br><br><em>We have been worrying about Covid. On 23 January 2020, Wuhan in China went into lockdown. Hong Kong went into high alert with people fighting to buy cleaning products and facemasks. With the experience of SARS back in around 2003, me and my family in Hong Kong were getting increasingly freaked out. At the time, travelling to Thailand and Vietnam certainly felt like it had a certain level of infection risk but Wing and I weighted things up and decided to proceed with care (in hindsight we probably were not that careful!).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator alignfull\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thoughts a year&nbsp;on:&nbsp;Not only were we lucky health wise on this trip (except for when Wing fell ill on Day 29, literally right at the end of the trip). We were lucky we got to go on this honeymoon at all. With the various travel bans and in particular the first lock down in the UK in March 2020 due to Covid. Had we planned our trip a week or 2 later then we may have had no options but to cancel the trip. In February 2020, Vietnam actually banned all flights into and out of China which meant there were way fewer tourists around, this actually made our travel safer and possibly more enjoyable due to less crowds. We now know that Vietnam has been managing the virus very well. In fact, Wing and I learnt from a medical university student while in Hanoi in Feb 2020 that they had good policies right from the start.
